County Council May Consider Regulating Timeshare Industry



Meanwhile, hotel room occupancy has continued to decrease, which prompted County Council Chairman Riki Hokama to propose a bill last September to limit timeshares on Maui to 2,200 units; however, the industry has already exceeded this limit. Joseph Toy, a panelist and hospitality advisor, said there has been a shift in demand from hotels to timeshares in an international market where worldwide branding of timeshares is prevalent. Stephen West, with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which represents hotels workers on Maui, said his union is opposed to more timeshares and conversion of hotels into timeshares because of the loss of jobs.
